NINTH CONVOCATION CEREMONY OF UTP
16 AUGUST 2009
UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is known to provide an excellent opportunity for in-depth study in specialised areas of engineering or to conduct cutting-edge research in new, emerging technologies. Their philosophy emphasizes the development of competent professionals trained to solve real-world engineering problems. This was what attracted Leong Siew Yoong, 26, from Ipoh, to continue her postgraduate studies in chemical engineering at UTP.
“After my undergraduate studies in industrial chemistry, my only intention was to further my studies in catalysis. My biggest worry was to find a university that has all the latest and needed equipment and facilities that could support my field of choice. When I found out about UTP and their reputation in providing the best, I immediately applied.”
When asked why she chose a local university over a foreign university, Leong said, “The quality at UTP is as good as at any university abroad. Also, I feel to obtain such quality, it’s not about the place but about the students and the facilities.”
Another petroleum engineering graduate, is Tadesse Weldu, 29, from Ethiopia.
“My country is a developing country, and the facilities are not so strong. There is only one university back home that offers postgraduate studies, and petroleum engineering is not one of the programmes offered,” he says.
Tadesse followed the advice of a friend (UTP alumni) and enrolled at UTP.
“I did my undergraduate in electrical and computer engineering. Initially, they didn’t want to give me a seat, but when I convinced them in seeing the link between petroleum engineering, electrical engineering and computer engineering, I was accepted.”
It is a big deal for Tadesse, as he wants to help his country in petroleum exploration.
“PETRONAS, along with many other oil and gas companies are conducting ascertainments at home. I want to be part of this discovery and the education that I received at UTP will help me achieve that.”
Along with Leong and Tadesse, UTP also witnessed a ‘special’ graduate, Tuan Mohd Irwan Tuan Daud, 22, who is only three feet tall in built but is able to excel in his studies. He graduated with a Second Class Upper (Honours) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Programme and also won the Final Year Project Award.
This year’s Chancellor Awards were presented to Hanisah Abdul Halim from Chemical Engineering Programme for Gold, Natasya Ng Jia Weyn from Civil Engineering for Silver and Muhammad Assad from Business Information Systems for Bronze.
The ceremony was also attended by members of the university’s Board of Directors and PETRONAS Management Committee members including the Rector / Chief Executive Officer of the University, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Haji Kasim.
In conjunction with the convocation ceremony, UTP and the Student’s Representative Council also organised a three-day festivity at its campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar.
The ConvoFair, which was held from Friday, 14 August until 16 August 2009, was officiated by YBhg Datin Prof Ir Dr Siti Hamisah bt Tapsir, Deputy Director General, Private Institute of Higher Education Department, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. Various activities took place during the ConvoFair which include activities like performances by guest artistes; Amy Search and Aizat AF.
