I DON'T know whether to laugh or cry when I read about the threat by an Indonesian group to ganyang (crush) Ma-laysia.
The self-styled vigilante group calling itself Bendera detailed its planned invasion starting with towns in Borneo.
Attacking Malaysia armed with sharpened bamboo sticks and bullet-proof black magic? It's ludicrous and pathetic at best.
This is the same group which set up roadblocks in central Jakarta to "sweep" out Malaysians and pelted stones at our embassy.
Many look like they should be in school or harnessing their excess energies to help their countrymen in the aftermath of the earthquake in west Sumatra. Here we go again helping them. Our government is the first to offer condolences and send emergency aid. Relief aid arrived by the plane loads.
Smart personnel, Mercy Malaysia and volunteers rushed to help in search-and-rescue operations and the reconstruction process. Our media are spearheading donation drives for cash and kind.
But are our good deeds appreciated? The Indonesians have even taken the Malaysia-bashing internationally, with hundreds posting comments on the forums of leading US newspapers after every story involving Malaysia.
What hurt the most was the aftermath of the killing of Noordin Mohammad Top. A police official emphasised three times on CNN that Noordin was Malaysian-born.
Has he forgotten who trained Noordin and where he got his training? Did we shout about the murders and robberies committed by illegal Indonesians here?
So much bitterness. So much rancour. Our information minister and the Ma-laysian media took pains to do damage control by planning a muhibbah of sorts between the peoples of both nations.
I just can't figure out why we are dubbed arrogant based on Nirmala Bonat's unfortunate case.
Most us have maids who have gone on the haj, own land, houses and fish ponds after working with us.
We are feeding 1.8 million Indonesian workers here and helping the Indonesian economy.
My maid, who has been with the family for 20 years, is due for home leave soon and still wants to work despite my pleading with her to return for good and tend to her ailing husband and grandchildren.
Then it demanded an exorbitant wage of RM800 per month, now lowered to RM500. Why is it calling the shots when we are doing the employing?
Bendera is said to have sent text messages to 1.4 million Indonesians here to join in the confrontation with Malaysia. Talking with several maids, construction workers and janitors revealed the standard reply: Ngak terima apa-apa. Ngak mahu bikin raepot. Sini lumayan. Mau kumpul wang lagi. (We received nothing. Don't want fuss. Good life here. Want to make more money.)
There's more to this anger than the issues that have surfaced. I sense a latent envy of the fact that Malaysia has been recognised by the US as a moderate progressive Muslim nation which can help in handling Asean, the Arab world and nuclear issues in Iran and North Korea.
This recognition came from US President Barack Obama, who Indonesians regard as their own, as he had lived in Jakarta as a child.
